Queenstown, flights and transitQueenstown, home of Christine's sister Sarah and her fiance Ramsey, was our 'home base' from which we traveled. A picturesque town of about 23,000 people, Queenstown is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by numerous mountain ranges.

Flying in and out of Queenstown was an unforgettable experience, as was the scenery visible from the air between Auckland and Queenstown. We also spent a few hours in San Francisco, California on the way home.

Southern AdventuresA few days after arriving in Queenstown, Christine and I headed east, to the coast, and then south, through Dunedin and the Catlins, to Invercargill. From there, we flew south to Stewart Island, a small, remote island full of New Zealand style forest. There, we spent 3 days 'tramping' (bakcpacking) on the famous Raikura Track, where we experienced the amazing wilderness in dense forest and surf-swept beaches.

Northern LegComing Soon!

After returning to Queenstown from our Southern trip, Christine and I joined Sarah and Ramsey on a 10-day road trip up the West Coast to Abel Tasman for 3 days of sea kayaking, and back down the east coast to Christchurch. Along the way, we visited some stunning locations including the Franz Josef Glacier, Panekuki (home of the Pancake Rocks), the beautiful beaches and tidal flats at Kaiteriteri, wine tours and tasting in the Marlborough District, swimming with dolphins in Kaikura, and a scenic railway trip into Christchurch where we spent a couple of days exploring what this beautiful city has to offer.
